Anna Marie Thayne alias Annie Rogers

Yeah, so all these years I've thought my ancestors were all upstanding citizens. But somehow, the family tree genealogist tried to eliminate the most colorful and interesting character of them all--Anna Marie Thayne--who was disowned and cut off from the Church. While it may be difficult to find out the truth about her, since there are so many versions, I'll tell an abbreviated version of the "Daughters of the Utah Pioneers" tale. I give the lessons in our Sagwitch Basin chapter. Right, I know I'm too young to be a member of the distinguished group of primarily 70+ women, but there's a bunch of fun women in the group, and I get an excellent meal made by some of the best cooks in Paradise. Now imagine my surprise when I'm perusing the lesson and come across a Thayne I've never heard of--we're all related--having come through two brothers, Anna's father John Johnson Thayne and my great great grandfather, Ebeneezer Thayne. Anyway, the man in the picture is Kid Curry. Earlier, Anna was linked with other wild bunch members. And probably was married for a time to Harry Longabaugh or The Sundance Kid and even had a kid with him. Unfortunately, she found out that Harry was already married to Etta Place!!! Now Etta, lived with the Thayne family, and both Etta and Anna were school teachers. Was that before they became prostitutes and outlaws? All stories indicate that Anna was often mistaken for Etta, and that Anna committed more crimes with the wild bunch than did her more famous friend. I'll tell more of this tale later, but it seems that poor Annie Rogers met her fate in South America, killed along with two other outlaws that were mistaken for Butch and Sundance.

Carole, since you said that all Thaynes are related than I think I might have a distant link to your family. I once met a "cousin" last name Thayne who lived in Florida. does this help? I am going to look it up again. Its a small world after all.

Lisbun, I can't think of anyone in Florida I'm related to. Most likely they are someone distantly related. Thanks for reading!

Hi Carol Thayne/Warburton! Suzy Sanders here. I wondered who Carol Thayne from Paradise was until I saw the pottery and the book, then I knew. Happy Easter.

According to the March 2008 DUP lesson, the man pictured with Anna Marie Thayne is Harvey Logan as opposed to Kid Curry. Author Kerry Boren insists that Etta Place (Ethel or Hazel Thayne) kept a diary. Any idea where it is? Ken

Ken, Harvey and Kid Curry are one in the same. And yeah the lesson mentions a journal. I'm very curious about that as well as a documentary on the DVD of the making of Butch Cassidy and Sundance had interviews with historians who say very little is known about Etta Place. I'd sure like to hear more of the story.

Etta Place did not leave a diary or journal; she actually left published memoirs (1928) under a pseudonym. Ida Thayne, niece of Annie Marie Thayne, was my dear friend of many years, and was married to my cousin, F. G. Burnett. I intend to publish Etta's biography in the near future. In the meantime, more information about her can be found in my recent book BUTCH CASSIDY: THE UNTOLD STORY. For more details, see my website: www.oboran.com. Kerry Ross Boren

Hi! I'm a Thayne descendant as well, but this is the first time I've ever heard this story! I'm completely fascinated and would like to learn more. Do you have any more information? Or can you point me to some authors or websites that might help? You said you ran across it in a Gen Soc. lesson--Any way you might be able to share that lesson with me? And the picture of Annie and Kid Curry? can you give me some background on it? I'm just totally fascinated here...

Craftmomma Send me an email at mcwarburton@gmail.com and I'll try to send you more information. I had more but lent my papers to my brother. Anyway if you live in the SL area the Pioneer museum up by the Capitol building has some really good information on her.

Along with all of this, does anyone have more information about the Mormon Underground who was run according to Kerry Ross Boren by 5 bishops one of whom was Bishop Thayne...Ann Marie's father. Kerry suggests that Butch was instrumental in helping this underground by funds and helping to hide the polygamists. I'm excited to find all I can about these stories along with the Longabaugh m to Annie Marie Thayne storie which was at one time published in Duschesne by the DUP or the Relief Society. I'm looking for a copy of that report as well, will look at DUP downtown SLC...thanks. Bambie...one of the cousins to all of the above.
